Map Surveyors also kept track of land owned by people. They mark the land of townships and cabins. There was a township every 6 miles squared, and the corners and borders were marked with wooden stakes, which were driven into the ground. The entire system was created by Thomas Jefferson.
A Map Surveyor in the 1840s kept track of different features of the land, as well as areas of land that have been inhabited by people. They used chains, which were made of metal links. There were 100 links in a chain, and ten chains equaled an acre of land. You could buy an acre of land for $1.25
